What's the story when you hit 12 points? I know you face an automatic ban but when you get your licence back are all the points wiped or do you still have the 12 points for the three years?

Unless you managed to get all 12 points at the same time I'd imagine the points for each offence will expire 3 years from the date they were issued, no? Or are all 12 points cleared at the same time once you serve your automatic ban?

That's what I'm asking. If you've accumulated 12 points in the last 18 months then it would appear very unfair to get your licence back after being off the road for 6 months to then still have 10 or even 12 points on your licence for the next 18 months or whatever. Surely someone here has been put off the road and can put us right?

I don't see that as unfair at all, if someone has managed to get 12 points, lose their licence, and get more points when they drive again, they deserve another ban really.

They are not always correct but this is what citizens information have to say

    http://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/travel_and_recreation/motoring_1/driving_offences/penalty_points_for_driving_offences.html
How long do penalty points stay on your licence?

Penalty points have a three-year lifespan. That means they remain on your current driving licence for a period of 3 years from the start date (effective date). Any period where your licence is out of date won't count as part of the 3 years. Where you accumulate 12 points and are disqualified for a period of six months, the points which led to the disqualification are removed at the end of the 6 months.

"the points which led to the disqualification"

Now does that mean all of them, or just the offence that put you over?

For instance if you had 10 and got 3 for speeding, is it a 6 month ban and back to 0 or back to 10?

they clarify that in one of the examples they use. You get a clean slate. Of course if you get points while you are disqualified they are not cleared and will be on your licence when you get it back.

If you are disqualified from driving for a period of six months as a result of accumulating 12 or more points, the number of points standing endorsed on your licence on the date you are disqualified (i.e. 28 days after the date of issue of written notification from the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport) are removed from your licence at the end of the six months.

According to this article from last year, all 12 points are not only removed after the 6 month ban, but are removed even if you ignore the ban!
