A colleague who lost VM analogue asked me to install saorview aerial.I carried signal tests at the back of his property, sound only from Kippure and three rock transmitters.More elevation resulted in the same.I told him that I would have to arrange for maximum height at roof top level.Mounting bracket was bolted in to gable end allowing clearence for fascia board.A high gain aerial was attached to pole and pointed at Kippure transmitter 27 kms away as the crow flies.Still sound only, this was puzzling as I had always received video of varying quality depending on distance from transmitter.Even transmitter in Pembrokeshire delivered viewable video.I searched the tv chat forums about the digital tv tuner in this tv a Sharp in this case,It revealed that digital tuner was locked into sound only mode.Solution purchase of a saorview hd STP box and this solved the problem.

    Glad you solved the problem.

For future reference, it sounds like they have an old TV, which is only capable of decoding Freeview SD, and hence not Saorview.

The two systems use difference types of encoding for their video streams - Freeview uses MPEG2 (for the SD channels), whereas Saorview uses MPEG4. Hence, you were getting audio and no video.

Is there any limit to the amount of Saorview aerials installed in an attic, once they are spaced apart?

    I'm thinking of using 3 of these for a relative's B&B

There's no power in the attic, so a powered amplifier or distributor can't be used

A multi-output masthead amp powered via one co-ax cable from a remote power supply would be option instead of three aerials in the attic, example - https://www.freetv.ie/variable-gain-uhf-masthead-amplifiers/
