Husband needs a new car, the reliable 03 Polo sadly died.

So we've a budget of 10-12k.

We have a Peugeot 5008 that's used as our main car, this is to get him to and from work really. He has a 40-50min commute five days a week. Mostly main roads, doesn't tend to be in rush hour traffic.

We were looking at the following:
Ford Fiesta
Seat Ibiza
Kia Rio

Any advise?

I know you mentioned small cars but is he open to a bigger car? They are way more comfortable and relaxing than small cars which would be a strong priority if doing a 40-50 minute daily commute each way.
