    Hi all,

I'm looking at two Mk6 golfs and would appreciate some advice on which one would better suit my needs? Any issues I should be aware of? A bit clueless here

    2009
    Golf S 1.4 Petrol

    2010
    Golf DCI 1.6 Diesel

Car would be mostly used for town uses but with some longer trips every couple of weeks.

    Thanks!

Golf S is pure basic and 1.4 is best avoided. The early 1.6 isn’t too hot either. Is there a third choice?

Thanks. I could keep looking, anything you'd recommend?

And just so I know what would be the downside to the 1.6dci?

Does your mileage and driving style warranty a diesel?

Stick with petrol then just not a 1.4 (non TSi) Golf.

Dunno if I’d even risk a TSI though.

Are they unreliable or just no poke?

    Desperately unreliable.

Thanks so much for the info, absolutely clueless.

Would a TDI be a safe bet?

They aren't the picture of reliability either but better than the 1.4 petrol.

The 1.6 is prone to EGR failure and injectors failing. Neither are cheap to repair. The 1.6 is one of the infamous emissions update engines though and if it's had the update VW will replace those bits FOC if they fail afterwards, but they are somewhat fond of them even before the update.

The 122bhp version is usually fine once there is proof the timing chain has been replaced. Wouldn't touch the twin charged ones though. I'd be looking at something other than a petrol Golf of that vintage myself though.

Petrol Civic/i30/Ceed/Prius in that age bracket

These are better options definitely avoid golf from that era especially the old 1.4petrol
