    Hi all,

Could use some advice, I am considering changing from a car to a 4x4 when my PCP deal expires next year. Due to the roads I will be travelling I am thinking of a 4x4, i'm currently thinking of a VW Amarok, but it would be only for private use, I don't need it for work. Is it possible to tax and insure a commercial vehicle for private use or am I am I better off just buying an SUV?

    TIA

Yes but it then goes off old cc rate so for example 2.0 would be €710 motor tax a year and increase obviously bigger the engine.

You can get ordinary cars, SUV etc with 4x4 also.

I had many pick ups and would love one again loved the height and were great to drive.

Do you mean true 4-wheel drive or merely an SUV-style body? Very few roads in the country you need 4WD on to be honest.

Plenty of advantages with an SUV layout however.

I know I don’t need 4 wheel drive but I’m thinking that if I’m going to get something like that I’d to have the ability to do it if needed.

I was thinking of a pick up because I may be able to get cheaper tax but it seems like I would need to get commercial insurance too and I’ve no idea how expensive that would be.

It looks like It would be easier to just buy an older toureg or something like that.

You won't get commercial tax though??? Unless you have a business and can prove so.

You will pay high tax on any commercial vehicle but as I said it depends on cc of engine.

You will get insurance but only a certain few will insure you and you will not be able to drive other cars under a commercial but private policy.

I have trade insurance now but on my 1st pick up it was over €1600. You could shop around and try a few before you commit.

Aren’t new crewcabs taxed on emissions now?

Pickups are still VRT'd at 13.3% and can be taxed commercially. It's Van based Crew Cabs that are now M1 passenger vehicles.

The load area and seating area have to be seperate to qualify as a commercial now.

You don't really need a 4x4 and you don't really need a pickup either ...so what is it you really need?

Unless you need to drive across ploughed fields you don't need raised ground clearance or low range gears...so why buy a massive Jeep like a Touareg if an Audi quattro or any 4WD capable crossover would do the job a lot cheaper?

Some more direction and a budget would be helpful...

Running a 4x4 is a bit of a change from running a car, 4WD will be bigger, heavier and use a lot more fuel than any equivalent car.
Any saving in commercial tax will be quickly swallowed up by the running costs.

You probably want an Amarok rather then need one

Couple of things to bear in mind , hard to insure privately most companies won’t even quote I eventually got mine insured through a broker after much hulaboloo

Private tax 710euro for year.commercial tax is not worth the hassle especially if your ferrying kids etc also not as easy to get as it used to be

    Mpg about 35mpg mixed driving

Great machine overall plenty of power and handles well for what it is just don’t expect car like economy or handling for your money

I would also go auto rather than manual much nicer drive

Are there no airbags in the rear of the amarok? To the OP the seating position may not always be that great in most pickup types, SUV ones may be better in that regard. If not going off-road any car with 4wd would do for a bit of piece of mind if you wanted it and would prob get a better car for the money. New amarok is 50 k plus anyway.
