    I need some advice please.
This is outside my back door. It covers a junction of sewer pipes from the neighbours.

    picture.php?albumid=2386&pictureid=15475

    My questions are
    a) what is it called?
    and
    b) it is cracked. Can/Should it be replaced in something other than the current cast iron?

Its either an AJ cover (Armstrong Joint I believe) which is to get access to your toilet pipe before it enters the manhole. Probably about 10" x 10 ". My one is made of hard plastic.

Next door they have the bigger version, its a manhole cover, about 2ft x 2ft (or its could be about 6" bigger, I'm useless at guessing sizes). They had to replace theirs recently, and bought a galvanised metal one.

Measure it then look on Woodies or DIY.com, and you'll very likely see one to fit.

    cheers.

Thanks for that. It's a big one (ooh er). It helps when I know what I am asking for.

no worries. Took a peep at woodies and diy.com. Definitely requires that you'd know exactly what you'd be looking for.

Give Chadwicks a shout, with the exact measurements. I'd imagine the bigger one can't be plastic given it'll definitely be walked on. Anyway you probably can't buy it in plastic.

    Have fun!

    https://galco.ie/

Send these a picture with a tape measure beside and they will fabricate one to fit exactly.

    €120.

    Will last forever.

Tbh the crack looks old.i don't think it requires replacing. There is almost zero chance of that unit ever being pressed in. If any of it fell in it would be the smaller part as the other bit is supported on all 4 sides.

Even then I don't think the smaller bit looks like it's shifting

    I'd leave it as is.

No it doesn't shift, but the neighbours regularly had blockage issues and they used to have to be 'dealt with' from there.
They have since fixed what was causing their blockage and backing up problems, so it is rarely opened now, but when it is, the little piece often falls in.

That galco price isn't bad considering.

    Thanks all.
