    Hi guys
My cars nct is out the 8th of November. The next available date in the nearest centres is the 31st of October. I know it will fail and there are a few things to be done but I won’t be able to have all done with the 8 days before it officially expires. My query is once I have the fail sheet and have rebooked for the recheck is this sufficient for the guards if I am stopped or could I face discipline for not having it nctd before the 8th?

Short answer you could face discipline, you had 3 months before it expired to have it tested

Iv had it out longer and just showed the booking confirmation and there was zero issues. You would want to be very unlucky for a Guard to take your car over an NCT which isnt out that long.

Depends whats wrong with the car too though that the OP knows it wont pass for which they have not provided any additional details. If its the likes of bald tyres, blown bulbs they might be pretty lucky not to be disciplined.

Don't go in with bald tyres anyway.
You won't be allowed to drive away and will have extra expense calling out the tyre service.

I agree but the usual scaremongering takes hold when a question like the OPs is asked. I merely let him/her know that it may possibly be ok for it to expire and nothing happen regarding the law as it was in my case. Of course if the car is in dangerous condition or the NCT is out a long time then i myself would love to see them get caught.

Totally agree, there is unwarranted scaremongering and high horse brigade on this forum. I too have driven a car for a spell without test when I was waiting for a mechanic to get parts and for a retest date after. Whatever about the likes of a ball joint or a shock that needs to be rectified was just making the point to the OP that the Guards may not be so light on them if they have bald tyres and blown bulbs which they can easily spot.

you've ten days before the test, why don't you fix some of the things you know are wrong?

If you don't have a current test and you're driving it, you can be done for it. Not safe to rely on a Gard being decent and leaving you off.

Some people seem to wait for the NCT to tell them to do anything with their car.

The Germans answer is the date has expired so you will be fined.

The Irish answer is you probably won’t be stopped and if you are it would be a cnut of a guard who would bother doing you for that.

Makes no sense to go for the test with blown bulbs and bad tyres on the logic that you are going down anyway.

Interesting about the tow, I never knew that.

So because the Germans do such a thing so should we?? Bull****. We are talking about the OPs situation here, its not like their NCT is out months i mean it isnt out at all yet.

you're advocating not complying with the Law?

The OP has a current NCT yet he is not getting repairs done now even though he knows his vehicle is unroadworthy. Says a lot about the current situation with insuring older cars

Car could be 4 years old for all we know.

With a minimal motoring hygiene (tyres, lights etc), a 4 year old car will pass straight away. Even my 11 years old car pass without retest.

If a car has many different bits and pieces to be taken care of, it is older for sure.

My point was that the existence of a valid current NCT is no guarantee of roadworthiness, yet it is often quoted here that insurers should accept the fact as if it were

think Dravokivich was aiming at the comment about insurance and older cars. I think he was saying that is a separate matter and the car in question here is not necessarily an older car.
