Confusing doorbell setup

We bought a house last year. Doorbell didn’t work. I had an electrician in for another job and asked him to fix it.
He told me that the setup was working but it just needed a new bell and that I could pick it up in woodies myself and fit it easily.
So I am only getting around to it today, but of course need it for tomorrow as we are having a birthday party!
Attached is the setup of the old bell.
I find it very confusing. As far as I understand, you either have a transformer fitted on the line, or else you have a battery. The current Bell has no battery. But it has four wires coming out of the wall (red, black, green and blue) but only the red and black are connected to the current bell. Does that make sense. I thought that there were two wires for the ringer and two for the power, so you either gave four wires connected and no battery, or two wires and a battery.

So anyway, I bought a bell in woodies (without transformer) and I connected the red and black lines from the wall to the bell, and inserted a battery. No joy. I pressed the ringer at the door, but no bell rang.

    Any advice?

So there’s nothing powering the bell. I’d say that’s your problem.

It seems like that in the old set up. But in the new one I fitted this evening, there is a battery. (The pictures are of the old setup).

First thing to check is the bell push. Its out in the rain all day and night...
That DingDong type is reliable enough, does the central hammer piece move even a tiny bit with bell push ?

There is probably the same type of wire used from the bell push back to transformer: (dont bother with the colour of the wires) and then this wire pictured comes from transformer also.

If you have used a battery powered bell, you will have to bypass the transformer.

Thanks. I’ll give it a go.
