    Hi,

I recently moved to Dublin from the North and have a northern reg car, I am going to set up a VRT check for the coming weeks. I have the car years now (bought in 2007) and do not have a invoice for the purchase, would this be an issue? Will it just be taken at market value?

It'll be based on the Open Market Selling Price

Put the details in the below and it should give you a rough idea.

If it was based solely off an invoice id imagine there would be a lot of cars "sold" for about a £1

Isnt VRT exempt if you import your own car that you've had for more than 6 months?

if you are moving for another EU country where you were resident.

I moved from Belfast to Limerick in 1995. All I had to pay was £5 on a 5 year old Hyundai pony 1.5 L

Mostly they wanted to see proof of residence and where I worked.
And where I was going to work in limerick and live.

Don't forget motor tax is big here pre 08.

Your car will be charged on cc basis.

If you have been resident in the North and owned the car for along time then you should be exempt from paying VRT. You will need to provide evidence that you lived there and that you used the car there. Revenue will look for proof of payslips, rent or mortgage payments along with car insurance receipts.

Once you are successful Revenue will provide you with a VRT exemption letter which you bring with you to the VRT inspection. The VRT people will then issue you an Irish registration.

    More info here:

One thing to note is that if you get a VRT exemption you cannot sell the car on for 12 months otherwise you will be liable for the VRT.
