    So, i bought an item on eBay and despite receiving a notification that the goods were dispatched, the seller has contacted me to say that they now have to renege on the agreement and will give me a refund, how is this done does anyone know?

    They will refund your payment back to Paypal who will then refund it to your credit card.

    Often within hours or at most a day or two...you should be able to see it by logging in to your Paypal account.

    Oh don't know how that works...guess you have to check your debit card account.

    Maybe someone else with experience of that can help you.

    Might try a transaction dispute with the bank

    Golden rule on ebay is to always use Paypal..It's risky to use any other method.
