I recently put a new floor down in a 10 x 5 livestock trailer, I used 6 x 2 larch timber. What could I put over the timber? Would a cow mat be ok to use instead of chequer plate?

Cow mats would be fine as long as they fit properly and cannot move.
You would need to take the mats out to allow the timber to dry out otherwise it will speed up the rotting process. I've a 2 cow IW trailer with a wooden floor and have rubber mats on it. It works fine as long as you remove the mats after washing and don't put them back in until you need to use it.

How do you fix the mats so they wont move?

The ones that I have came out of an old double horse box and we cut them to size. One at the front part and the other to the back iykwim.

I remember a time when livestock trailers had only wooden floors....6x2 larch is a decent bit of timber. If kept reasonably clean and dry, it would probably last a long time without anything over it........

We fitted one in an 8*5 trailer here 8 years ago.
I was just remarking there last time I cleaned it that it looked new.

At same time we put same floor in builders trailer and again it’s like new still, both trailer stored indoors 99% of tue time.

Both got generous coatings of burnt oil after installing.
