Wireless Broadband and Phone landline

    Hi All,
I am seriously considering giving up my landline as it is not used on a regular basis. The broadband, up and downloads, are currently supplied through the landline. They are very poor, 8-10 mb. This, in comparison with some major towns, is very much behind the national average.
So, my plan is to go wireless. A friend has tested his wireless modem in my home and found double the speeds at least, for the up and downloads. Now I'm ok with going wireless but I need to know what is the current yearly cost of retaining the land line as I believe it to be expensive to have it reconnected if I decide to do so at some point in the future. I'm with Sky through the landline at a cost of €47 a month. I'm out of contract with them so changing is not a issue. The wireless modem is free on contract with 3 for two years. The monthly charge is €30 which includes vat. I would like to know - if anyone has experienced this - what would be the modem monthly cost plus a landline monthly charge in total. I could then make a decision. Please help if you can. Thanks.

You can buy your own 3G modem and put a 3 Pay as you Go sim in for 20 euro a month and unlimited data.

Thanks for responding. The price I was quoted from 3 for a modem is €180. Not quiet sure what price the sim card is but I thought I overheard somewhere a price between 20 and €25. Yes at €20 a month there is a saving of €10 under contract for 2 years. And an overall saving of €240 which more than pays for the initial outlay of €180. The only small hitch might be if you buy the modem outright and it 'dies' after a year you won't be covered by guarantee where as you would be under contract. Just a thought. Thanks again for your input.

No. That's on the bill pay. On the pre-pay it's pretty much unlimited for 20 EUR for 28 days. There is no mechanism to charge you more on pre-pay. Well, not beyond whatever credit is on the SIM anyhow. And if it ever becomes a problem, there no problem changing to another pre-pay SIM.

It's still a crummy option though. Mobile data is not broadband. It's midband.

Thanks. I don't get close to that limit. But you are right in quoting an 'actual' limit as opposed to companies quoting 'unlimited' which is unfair marketing without reading the small print - how many of us do that ?

So i'm talking about buying the modem from someone other than 3. PCWorld carry a TP Link Archer MR200 that is plug and play (Plug it in, put the simcard in the back, you have wifi).

These modems are covered by manufacturer warranty and i've got two running for almost 2 years now and never had a problem.

The simcard is free when you buy a 20 euro topup and that gives you a month of unlimited broadband.

Once more your topups stack. I have two simcards with 200 or more euro credit now.

Dont get scammed inito a 3 contract.

Thank You. That sounds like a better option. What price is the modem ?

100 Euro in PCWorld, less online. If you dont care about AC wireless (5G Wifi, nothing to do with the broadband connection its the same) you can get an ex rural broadband one for €50 (https://www.ruralwifi.ie/product/300mbps-wireless-n-4g-lte-router-tl-mr6400/)

Great information. Thanks a million. I'll check out all your options.

Can someone post a link regarding the prepay
    €20 top up from 3
I have been looking at mobile option too but can't see anywhere on 3 web page unlimited for €20

It's not specified as unlimited. And it's not a data SIM either.

It's their prepaid phone SIM with AYCE (All you can eat) data for 28 days if you top up by 20 EUR.

    https://www.three.ie/plans/sim-only/prepay/

You have to be smart about it.

That offer may be disappearing end October. But so far they're just pushing it on month on month. It's been around for at least 2 years. And since it doesn't bind you into a contract, you can always go for another SIM after that. Whatever is the best deal.

Surprised to know that as I am out of contract with them and paying €30 monthly for all mobile calls and 'unlimited' data. Not surprised they haven't contacted me as they are getting €10 more than you say is available. Not too untypical from any of the suppliers of broadband.
