Has anyone come across any decent books about gaming from around the time of the NES/Master System up to SNES/Dreamcast?

    Plenty out there.
    Some of my favourites:

    I am Error/Racing the Beam

Two books, the first on the NES and the second on the Atari 2600. Both are very technical and go into how the systems worked, their limitations and how coders got around them. They also present test cases of games through the systems life that were technical marvels at the time and details how they worked. They're a bit more technical but they aren't overly so

    Hardcore gaming 101 books

Theses usually focus on a specific topic and go into them in exhaustive detail covering pretty much every game, even the most obscure, it detail. Really nicely put together with quality writing, layouts and high quality photos.

The Game Console is a tour through the evolution of video game hardware, with gorgeous full-color photos of 86 consoles. You'll start your journey with legendary consoles like the Magnavox Odyssey, Atari 2600, Nintendo Entertainment System, and the Commodore 64. The visual nostalgia trip continues with systems from the 1990s and 2000s, and ends on modern consoles like the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Wii U.
