Golf Mk5 power steering light reset

I understand that this is a common issue that occurs when the battery had been drained. (which my wife is very skilful at)
The usual cure is to drive it slowly and steer lock to lock to re calibrate. I've done this several times with no luck.
My local mechanic tried this too and he also had a go at resetting the light with his diagnostic kit. He uses a snap-on diagnostic, so perhaps it's not as thorough as the VAG COM.
Is there any way to reset the power steering sensor without bringing it in to a Vw main dealer and shelling out the big bucks?
My local guy is great and affordable, the main dealers is crazy expensive for anything.
I'm handy enough with a spanner, but this stuff does my head in.
    It's a 2006 1.9TDI, any help is appreciated, thanks.

You will get vag.com units outside main dealers. My indi here in Cavan has one.

You need to do g85 basic settings not clear the light with the scanner as such, any decent aftermarket diagnostic tool will be able to put it into learning mode

    Great, thanks.
