Hello, I need some help please. My Mother in law has Cablecomm in Longford and I need to get her a recording device to allow her to record live and schedule recordings. She had a old TV with an inbuilt video recorder but that is now dead .

I wanted to buy a small new TV and a device like the walker box but I am not sure which one to purchase. any advice? Simple requirements:
    1. menu to see the channels coming in from Cablecom
    2. record and play back TV shows ( live recording and scheduling recordings )

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

OP your question relates to a local cable TV provider that only operates in one town. It may be difficult to get assistance in relation to this other than direct from the provider or from someone local, but here goes.

It appears to me, from Crossan’s (very basic) website, that they transmit their TV services as unencrypted DVB-T. That being the case, you may be able to use any Saorview compatabile PVR with the service. This isn’t normally the case because other cable TV providers normally require you to use their equipment.

I’m going to leave this in terrestrial on the basis that people here will more be able to advise you on a good DVB-T PVR. Just to note as well that if you are buying a new TV, nearly all new TVs will have DVB-T tuners and many may be able to add PVR functionality with a memory stick.

Both Crossans of Longford Town and Smyths of Cavan Town indeed use unencrypted DVB-T (it removes the need for boxes and allows unlimited free multiroom). They officially allow use of whatever equipment you want to use.

They both also still broadcast analogue TV with no plans to stop broadcasting or limit service. Cavan cable even had a handful of channels that were only available on analogue a few years ago, but I'm not sure if this is still the case in and if it ever was in Longford.

Any device that can record Saorview will record Cavan/Longford digital cable TV.
