Tax for married couples

Hi - I'm really confused about the tax system for married couples. I'm a complete taxation philistine. I would appreciate any help.

My husband and I earn 39,000 and 44,000e respectively. I was told that be would not benefit from being married in a taxation sense as we both earn over the 1st tax band threshold, and that it is only of benefit if one partner earns less than 35000 or is not working.

Basically if you earn above it, nothing changes for you in terms of tax.

Is that the case? Or are we missing out on a potential tax credit somewhere?

    Many thanks!

It's handy to be jointly assessed for tax purposes in case of any sudden future changes such as unemployment etc where it would be assist with transfering applicable rate band and credits.

Currently on the salaries stated you are both using your credits and rate bands so there's nothing to transfer between you meaning no benefit currently.
