I'm really confused as to what to do. I've been on illness benefit since jan 2016 and I've just received a letter to say it's up this coming January. Now I've to decide weather to apply for invalidity or disability allowance. I don't know which one is suitable for me. I have sciatica from a bulging L4 L5 disc. I was on a waiting list for over a yr before I got physio and steroid injections. Neither of which have worked. I take a lot of pain killers in order to live day to day. I'm a single parent.
In Feb I was diagnosed with depression and I'm now attending pieta house.
I had an assessment with social welfare about 3 wks ago and now I got this letter, is this connected? My job is held for me and I would love to go back but I'm still classed as unfit by specialist and G.P.
Which should I apply for? Where do i go from here?

    Apply for both.

Basically the exact same boat as you, I fought to get onto the IP due to it being a set personal rate and not means tested, and because you're not 'on parole' and are not reassessed regularly. It's a fight though, you'll most likely be rejected at first, and have to appeal. Definitely apply for both, and take DA if it's offered, you can move on from that to IP in the future. I wish you well.

It comes down to your PRSI credits. You can qualify for IP without means testing if you have the credits built up from your previous work and PRSI payments. If you do not have enough credits you can apply for DA, DA is means tested. When applying for either you need to show you are incapable of work and you will be medically assessed.
