laptop won't start

My son has an Acer Aspire 5552, which has been running hot for a while, and he's used an external fan to try to keep it cooler. Now it won't start, internal fan comes on for a couple of seconds then it stops.

I've taken it apart, cleaned a nice little blanket of fluff from the cooler, new paste on the chips, tried starting with no hdd/dvd drive attached, different ram, battery/no battery. No joy.

Is it worth a shot buying a replacement CPU for say €10 ?
I know CPUs tend to shut down if they get too hot, I'm just wondering if prolonged running hot would burn one out.
I think its this CPU http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/K10/AMD-Athlon%20II%20Dual-Core%20Mobile%20P320%20-%20AMP320SGR22GM.html

New CPU arrived and fitted. Same issue. Any ideas?

No POST beeps = no info. At that point you're probably looking at board repair/new board which is never gonna be worth it with Athlon 2.

Unless you can get some more diagnostic info out of it I'd bin it.

Time for the laptop graveyard I think.

It appears to be a laptop from 2010 so it had a decent innings.
