What car? Small car that's diesel and automatic

Hi all, the mother is getting older and never liked a bigger size car. She finds it awkward to park and judge its size when in and about the town.

I'm not a car guy really but I'm imagining something in the size class of a VW Golf. She almost never has a passenger and is more of a runabout as she doesn't drive too far away, one hour radius I guess.

The VW dealer is 45 minutes away whereas we have Ford, Opel, Toyota in the nearest town. Probably one or two more but unsure which.

For that combination of small, diesel automatic, is there any clear and obvious car that jumps out?

    Thanks

Diesel isn’t needed for this scenario. Get a petrol. Depends on budget and if you’re going back a few years it’ll be hard to get an auto and petrol perhaps but diesel would be madness based on what you’ve said her needs are.

Fiesta or fabia sounds ideal. If you can one with parking sensors even better.

    Petrol 100%

    Agree

If budget is smaller something like a Fabia petrol auto.

Maybe she'd prefer something slightly higher but based on small car. Toyota CHR

My mother is in a similar position. She currently has a 142 auto 116d BMW and is looking to replace. It is for sale if you are interested?

Yeah, I probably should have explained. We are out in the country and have a diesel tank in the shed to fill the car and a jeep we have, so diesel it is.

No, thanks. Most likely we'll get it through a dealer.

Fair enough, understandable. I would still reccommend all the same. My other half has an identical model except it's a 151. Both are auto and they're a brilliant little car, the auto box is fantastic and they are seriously good on juice.

Looking at the VW website, it does seem to have lots of options for diesel and auto. Even the mid range Polo can be diesel and auto. Past a Hyundai dealer tonight too. I'll have a look at their site. I just want to have a good idea of what's out there.

If it's only a runabout car why not get an e-Golf, or other similar electric car.

It would suit her driving pattern and cost far less to run and maintain plus the tax benefits.

You would out a hell of a lot of diesel (presumably at a vat reclaimed price reading between the lines) for the price difference between a diesel golf and and egolf. Motor tax wont be much different and maintaining a new car is cheap.
