The engine management light isn’t a fail unless it’s the rule has changed very recently.

It was only abs and airbag lights that would fail

AFAIK they will not test a diesel with the EML on.

A check engine light in a diesel is a fail item according to the test manual.

Some posts on here seem to suggest people with diesels have passed with the light on so some of it must be down to the testers discretion, but technically it is a fail.

I passed in a petrol with it on in the past, I didn’t know there was a different rule for diesels.

    Engine light on?
    For diesel it's a fail
For petrol it's not a fail

I dont see it mentioned on the latest NCT manual. Heres what Section 60 says in its introduction:

    MALFUNCTION INDICATORS
    Method of Testing
Ensure the malfunction indicators for Supplemental Restraint Systems (SRS), Airbags, Electronic Stability Control
(ESC), Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Braking System (EBS), Parking Brake, Tyre Pressure Monitoring
System (TPMS), Electronic Power Steering (EPS) or brake fluid warning light are in working order.

It's on page 10 for the diesel smoke test.

Correct and Right, Sir... I see it in the pre-check for smoke. So they'll actually refuse to do the Smoke test at all.

OP, have you tried to suss out the reason for the light?

If you have an OBD tool ideally one that is wifi/bluetooth that can be hooked up to torque pro app, you could clear the fault just before the test and hope the light doesn't come back on.

We did it recently, the EGR sensor was faulty, kept throwing on the EML, just before the NCT used Torque Pro app to remove the fault, and it stayed off for 3 hours before showing up again, was enough time to get it through the NCT.
