    is it possible for a Solicitor to get you to the states these days or what are the rules in the present day ?

    Most work visa applications will need the help of an immigration attorney at some stage. The majority of work visas (L1/L2/H1B) require the employer to petition for them, same for green card applications. There are some classes of GC that you can self-petition for but even then you would want an attorney.

    The only exception to this would the DV lottery visas and family class applications - generally they don't need an attorney.
