    Hi
A family member was at a TV shop recently

The sales person told them they had smart TVs that have BBC iPlayer and ITV alternative (I don't know what it's called) built in and ready to use here in Ireland.

Apparently it's a new type of "certified" TV

    Is this true ?

Can the BBC iPlayer be used in the republic over a standard ISP connection with "giggery pokery"?

They won't work with a standard ISP connection with "giggery pokery". I think on initial setup if you choose Ireland it won't give you either of those Apps, choosing UK should with the "giggery pokery" on.

The iPlayer has also got very good at detecting connections from devices logging on using "jiggery pokery"

But all in all using giggery pokery it is very much possible as I have it on all my smart TVs.

    Thanks for the info

So with an out of the box smart TV there is no way that the BBC iPlayer will work in the ROI without some third party application/software/configuration etc.

I think I'll go to the TV shop and quiz the sales guys about it.
Find out exactly what they are basing their claim on and how they plan on setting it up.

While there get a demonstration of the TV you intend to buy, as we all know what sales pitches are like!

Isn't there an international version of the iPlayer out there? I've never used that because it's the UK one I'm interested in.

Sales agents will say absolutely anything to get a sale

They got rid of it a few years ago.

I think the initial query has been answered, and I think we’ll have to close this thread in case there’s any progression as to discussing circumventing regional restrictions
