Does anybody know why Cork County Council or TFI are adding curbing around every bridge along the N71?

I first met it at the Ballinhassig junction and they havr steadily been working West and are now approaching Ballinascarthy.

They are doing them on the N20 too.

It's normally to waterproof the bridge some bit as water seeps straight through the grass verge and then through the structure itself. Water going through masonry arches in particular is a big problem as it washes the mortar out of the joints between the stones.
