was the same when I was doing artic lessons couldnt get my head around it. if you can get a car and small trailer use these to practice and understand the basics of where the trailer goes when you do something and how to correct it. on the truck dont over turn the steering wheel. Where are you based and where on your lessons are you doing your reversing practise? (in the school, an industrial estate, etc)?

Some people never crack it... :o

But... Get a loan of a car and a short single axle trailer with axle in the middle/toward the front -

Practice like hell on it, once you have it mastered, an artic will be a doddle by comparison.

I think I know who you might be with. Schools over a chippy? Irish school of motoring have their own reversing bay up in the industrial estate. If you don't get the test with your current crowd id recommend going up to ism. They'll let you reverse for 2 hours if you want

Dont forget aswell to take shunts forward if needed. Better taking a shunt and getting it close to right then trying to be a 1 go hero and going arse ways

the secret is not to put too much of a lock either way on the steering wheel unless it really is necessary. When backing into a shed or whatever, only small adjustments to the steering and a slow, steady pace will usually get you in without too much hassle. Turning the wheel too much means you get tied up in knots locking from one side to the other, over compensating, etc etc.

I learned this while working on a neighbour's farm doing silage and backing big bale trailers. I used to be not great at backing in but my boss told me this was what i was doing wrong and to take it easy on the hard locks and only turn the wheels a small bit either way. I took his advice and with a little practice at it I could back a tractor & 40+ foot bale trailer through the eye of needle.

If you're having trouble you could always do your test in one of these

    so easy it's like cheating

Ism, been there done that! My advice to all is to keep a way from them! I’m a in driving job at the moment, I know a bit I’ll say, their reversing bay is tiny, and instructor a polish lad he didn’t know much himself I’ll say he didn’t do it for living as a Artic tuck driver just not professional a waste of €€

There is a driving school based up around finglas that use a draw bar I've seen. I think it's a polish guy running his own place but can't remember the name of it

What time are you doing your lessons? I used a school in Finglas and to practice reversing I used to book lessons after 6pm as Dublin Industrial estate was always empty then so could reverse as much as I liked. The key as others said is go slowly and don't be afraid to shunt, IIRC you can do 2 or 3 shunts on the test without being marked down.

Is it the reversing in general or just one side? When i did my own test i was able to shunt it once without a mark, i needed a second shunt for which i did get a mark, it was a blind side reverse, like yourself i didn't have the opportunity of a car/trailer to practice with. Are you lining the tractor unit up for the reverse as in not having the tractor and trailer being effectively a rigid? This was how i was initially doing it but once i left the trailer facing slightly off angle to the tractor unit it helped alot, you are allowed to stick your head out the window for a drivers side reverse, or at least you were. The technique is a little on a little off, no need to put full lock on the wheel for example. is it a single, double or tri axle trailer you are using? I'm not familiar with the reversing bays in Dublin. I think Silvera did, though it was a rigid and drag trailer if i remember correctly.

Hi all, I’m, in’t till all the way. I will get it, as I said before I do get it right sometimes the thing is I’m better on the blind side but I still don’t feel it, it’s somewhere in my head but this is what I try to do 1 setup 2 set the angle 3 follow the trailer 4 make corrections. And I’m practicing on an open corner as well because that’s what on the test day they! Try to get you to do. Because it’s the hardest so on my head the image of 90 degree corner that’s why my back wheels always end up on the the middle of the corner, and I need to know how to prevent it from happening all the time.on the open corner on my last lesson I told the instructor I’m gonna change the open corner to the 90 degrees one and I get it, right didn’t need to shunt. but after all I still have to get the hang of because you have a lot to deal with on the test day you don’t need the reversing to hold you back my last unsuccessful attempt on the test day, all correct except reversing even the tester was in chock, ahh. If anyone knows someone with car and trailer so I do some practice let me know plz. Some €€ on offer.

This might sound a bit silly but it worked for someone I know who was in a similar position to yourself, he just needed to get the theory into his head.

He got himself a little remote control artic, a cheap one with a wired control and practised with that. It worked for him and for less than half the price of a single lesson.

Dont worry about it, just go work for Stobart. When they did the tesco work it was a rarity to find one who could manage to reverse on to the bay properly

I worked for Tesco when Stobart had the contract, in some cases 10-12 shunts wasn't unheard of.

The really good ones reversed in from outside the gate and did it in one shunt, others drove in and ended up as described in line 1.

When I was doing mine the instructor wasn't much of a help with the right hand left hand down thing just confused me more.
What I find a help is angle tour tractor unit so you can see where you want to put the trailer before you start reversing.
Is your backing to the right. Noise your truck right and small bites, remember a little in the front means a lot in the back.

We all struggled starting out and there will be days even when you'll have been driving arctics for years you'll get it wrong.

Hope you can get it OP.
I'm sure if you look up a few of the blogger lads on YouTube you'll pick up a few hints.

To, (del2005) I do my lessons on the weekend, only because I’m working and I think the instructor doesn’t do after 18:00 and most of my lessons is week on week off basically is that 2much gap between the lessons??
