Selling a UK car that's been in Ireland back to UK

    Hi!

I have a bit of a interesting situation here and looking for some help.
The car(Honda Civic 2010) was brought to Ireland in march of 2015. I bought the car in 2017. Due to poor market situation I'm thinking about selling the car back to UK simply cause the market is a lot bigget there and I'd be hoping to claim the VRT back.

The thing is - I don't know if I even can post it on autotrader since I've irish reg. Another thing is who to sell the car to, I would be looking for a rather straight deal, i bring the car to UK to sell it the same day to a car dealer/private person, get the papers done. What's with the logbook? What kind of documents do I and the new owner have to fill to claim the vrt back. Also would the new owner need to pay any sort of tax since the car has been in Ireland for over 3 years now? Honestly don't know where to start first, would appreciate and help, maybe someone has been in this situation and knows how to approach it. Thanks a lot for any help :)

Can you claim VRT because you're moving back to UK or exporting it back to UK ?

It can be reclaimed for either....once the Car is exported it doesn't matter what the Irish Owner is doing.

Would that apply for trading in the UK imported car back to UK dealer?

I assume so. It's pretty simple to do. Might involve effort on dealers part

Reclaim form is linked to above. Fairly straightforward really, considering you're dealing with Revenue.;)

    What's the VRT worth?

Is the VRT refund same as on the day of the payment or does it depend on the current value of the car?

    Current value.

It depends on the OSMP Revenue put on it at time of VRT export inspection.

It will als dependon VRT having been paid on the importation and it not qualifying for an exemption. Would be rereg'd in the UK onto its old reg plate number. Reazlitcally you'd need to do that for a private sale. Check out what the value is for webuyanycar.com for a floor on the price before moving forward.

Sounds like a lot of effort for very little gain once you take other costs into account

What car is it? The UK is awash with cars and I cant see anyone wanting to buy a car from here unless its really sought after and there is a lack of them in the UK. You'd also want it to be quite a bit cheaper to tempt a uk buyer to consider it.

UK buyers very slow to touch anything "different". Brother brought an a3 over with him and claimed VRT back. Never able to sell it.

It will have an export marker on the V5 that in itself, will raise flags with prospective buyers.

As above. And UK Insurers can be iffy about Imports.
I know the Car might well be an original UK Car, but the UK Insurers lump all Imports in together...it's basically a box-ticking thing.

OP, unless you can realistically claim back more than €1k net, then you are probably going to annoy yourself with this.
Frankly it's a tough one. The UK is full of Civics, but the Irish insurers are reluctant to touch them (especially when they become old (and cheap) enough to be attractive to 'Lads'.
