Shrub Identification

    I bought this shrub a few years ago. As can be seen, the leaves are spikey, and have little "barbs" along the leaves that cause small red patches on bare skin, if you brush off of it. Some of the leaves have turned bright red from the base outwards, and have a purple white pompom shaped flower at the base.
    The flowers and redness of the leaves have only appeared this year.
    My wife thinks that it looks a bit "creepy", and I think I'm in agreement with her.:eek:
    Has any body any idea what it is?
