How much are they worth?

We’re looking at selling one of our cars because we both now commute on the luas, so they’re both sitting idle for most of the week.

We’ve got a 2012 Golf 1.6 tdi R-Line with 101k km that we bought when I was doing big mileage, but I’ve changed job twice since then, taxed until March and NCT’d until March 2020, and just had the timing belt and water pump replaced. We also have a 2014 Cee’d VR7 1.4 petrol with 42k miles (an import), taxes until June, and NCT’d until May 2020.

We’re undecided which one to sell, or what money to be looking for for them. Probably only doing about 15k km per year now so we don’t need the diesel.

So what do you reckon they’re each worth?

Id sell the Golf as the Kia has loads of warranty left, is older (you’d probably end up trading the golf up in a few years) easier to sell (lower price bracket and more mass appeal) and more likely to go wrong.
That’s if you like the Kia.

Thanks guys. We were leaning towards selling the Golf. The Kia was bought as a runabout, and that’s all we need really at the minute. Will hopefully be able to have a few years of trouble free, boring, motoring until I can get something interesting.

I was hoping about 8k for the Golf, would that be about right?

What are they asking on Donedeal ?
Your's seems to be a better bet than most. Nice Spec, and only 10k (miles) per year.
I'd be pushing the mileage, the long NCT, and the recent Belt change. In fairness from what you've said it should sell quickly.
The asking price is up to yourself, but DD really sets the price point for private sales....if your's is way above the rest, they won't be interested.

I would say that Golf is worth 10k easily, I would start there and see how it goes.

selling the golf sounds like a good plan.
down side is after 2 years without insurance one of you will lose you no claims bonus.
Your No Claims Bonus may have expired after moving abroad or a lapse in your car insurance cover.
Are you aware that if you have a gap of 2 or more years in your car insurance cover, your no claims bonus may have expired? Many drivers in Ireland are unaware than if they have do not have an insurance policy in their own name in Ireland for more than 2 years, they may lose their entire no claims bonus. This affects drivers who have been living abroad (even if they have been driving abroad) or those who are insured as a named driver instead of having a policy in their own name.

Not if they are spouses, they can just switch policy holder on the one car every second year between them. Insurance companies don't have a problem with that if they are married.
