Macbook OS X - version updates query

Hi I have a macbook os x and currently using Lion.
I am going to get some more RAM and update the version so that its more compatible with applications etc.
Are there any problems updating to the newest version or should I stick to something around 10.9-12?
I am not v tech savvy so solid advice would be appreciated.

How old is your machine? Anything older than mid-2012 will not run Mojave.

Thanks for that.

I got it in Jan 2009 - it originally had snow leopard on it I think.

I am now on Lion but was told that to get a more recent update, I would need more memory - I have that ordered now.

So what version would you recommend?

El Capitan - it’s a free upgrade too.

If you’ve got a spinning hard drive in the machine you should really consider putting an SSD into it. It will make a huge difference.

I put a cheap (I think €30 delivered) 60Gb SSD in my brother's 2009 macbook pro, and it made a world of difference to performance. Easy enough to do also with laptops from that era - everything is just screwed in.

wow thanks for all of that - i am not sure if thats my macbook though - all i know is that its an OS X bought in jan 2009

Click on the Apple logo and select About this Mac > it will give us the information about your Mac the model year and the storage RAM etc

+1 re SSD - I swapped the optical drive in my mid 2012 macbook pro for an SSD to boot from, leaving the 1Tb normal drive for dumping various crap. Runs like a new machine! (well, much newer anyway )
