Another Android to iOs thread

Please move to correct forum if needed :)

I'm going back to iOs today after approx 2 years out.

I bought a iPhone 7 when it first came out and traded it within 3 months for a Galaxy S8. The headphone jack really put me off at the time, however the last few months i'm using bluetooth headphones for running and bluetooth in the car and much prefer this so I have no issue going back to another (2nd hand) iPhone 7.

    The main questions I have:

The battery health is @88%;, I'm thinking of getting the 29 euro replacement from CompuB before the deal is out at the end of the year - Will I have any issue with this as I am not the original owner? The phone is out of warranty (it is approx 20 months old) will this effect it either?

What is the best app to transfer apps I have on my Samsung straight over to iPhone (similar to Androids Smart Switch I guess i'm looking for) ?

I just downloaded iTunes, set up a new Apple account and authorised it on my laptop. Will I have to set the phone up through this and will it automatically back the phone up when connected to the laptop?

I have only used about 15gb on current phone so 32gb on iPhone should not be a problem - right?I have my photos backed up to Google Photos and Google Drive, would these be an issue on an Apple device?

    Thanks in advance!
    R

AFAIK CompuB are only replacing batteries if they are diagnosed under a certain health.

I think Apple have an Android app called "Move to iOS". *edit* they do it's https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.apple.movetoios, don't know how well it works though but loads of 1 star reviews from butt-hurt android fanboys which you could probably safely ignore.

I haven't used iTunes to set up an iPhone is donkey years, you sign into your AppleID on the phone and that's that.

Depends how Google Photos works on iOS I'm not 100% sure as it's not fully integrated to the OS like it is on Android. You may have to periodically delete from the iOS Photos app once the photos are up in Google Photos safely.

Thanks a mil for your reply. I will give CompuB a ring to find out about this. I just want it replaced for peace of mind.

Edit: They said they have to hook the phone up in store and check the serial number to see if it's eligible. They said it doesn't matter about the battery health and that since it's an iPhone 7 he's almost 100% sure it will be fine.

Just download google photos on the iPhone, log in and all your photos will be there.

Ah great - thanks for that! Sorry for the simple questions!

Will my contacts transfer automatically too? When I currently save contacts I save them to my Gmail account instead of the sim card/phone itself. Hoping this won't be a problem.

I've downloaded that ''Move to iOS'' app as suggested ; will give it a bash when I pick up the phone tonight.

Also I know the phone doesn't have fast charging capabilities but from searching online people say a newer 29W (?) block charger can be used and they see an improvement? Any comments on this.

Can you copy your contacts to your sim?
If not, then just add your gmail to the mail app that’s built in. Then turn gmail contacts on and they will be on your phone.

There are : types of charging for the iPhone.
Standard. 5w plug. Comes in the box.
Faster. 12w plug. Comes standard with the iPad.
Fast. 29w. Optional extra purchase of plug and cable. Not sure if the iPhone 7 can utilise this.

Thanks for all the inputs folks. I'm sure I'll have more questions over the next day or two once I get it set up :D

You won’t see any difference between the 29W adapter and the 12W adapter on your iPhone 7.

So if you have the 12W that is used for some iPad’s then use that.

You can set the phone up on it’s own, but you’re better off to periodically connect it to your laptop and iTunes to allow iTunes to do a full backup of the phone on your laptop, rather than the partial updates it does for settings and accounts to your iCloud storage. iTunes can be set to do an automatic backup when you connect the phone.

I have only used about 15gb on current phone so 32gb on iPhone should not be a problem - right?I have my photos backed up to Google Photos and Google Drive, would these be an issue on an Apple device?

Yeah that won’t be any problem, have a 32GB iPhone 7 Plus myself with all the main Google apps on it - Home (for Chromecast), Drive, Mail, Photos and Maps (nifty update to maps too btw - location sharing, and whoever you’re sharing your location with can see your battery life too, can’t do that on the “Find Friends” app).

All works seamlessly. Once your photos are backed up (I have them set to be uploaded and backed up to Google Photos automatically), the assistant in Google Photos asks do you want to delete photos that have been archived, and then suggests you got to the ‘Recently Deleted’ album in the iOS app and select ‘Delete all’.

    Hi all,

Set up the majority last night and just a couple of niggles that I have to get my head around (albeit some aren’t that important)

The keyboard is tiny. I tried the zoomed in option and didn’t like how the rest of the phone looked so reverted to standard mode. Any other way to change size? I’ve big hands. Also; is there any way to hard press a letter for a . , ? ! To come up instead of clicking 123 then on why you want? Just to speed things up. Downlaoded swiftkey for a dark keyboard, can't find the option to change size like it's android version counterpart though.

I backed up WhatsApp on old phone but there is no option to restore chats on this - I can only back up again... am I missing something?

Edit: I removed the call quality problem - I cleaned the ear piece above the screen (celotape over it, pressed around with nail and then removed tape, dust and dirt came off with it and the quality is now clear :) )

Edit 2: Managed to bulk ''read all'' through Gmail on desktop. All working now with no annoying badge icons for years old messages!

I think this is poor advice and incorrect.

There is no need to connect to iTunes periodically at all and then be dependent on locally stored back ups. Have not connected to iTunes in years and do not have any issues.

iCloud is a much better option as it's safe and it does more than a system and settings back up as you can back up as much as you want within the iCloud settings. So this can cover all photos, mail, contacts, bookmarks, etc.

Much better than a laptop backup imho.

Thanks for all the advice and tips! Liking it so far. Took it off charger at 100% 11pm Wednesday night, used my normal usage yesterday, albeit had low battery mode on when it reached around 30 percent and woke up this morning with 9% (I put phones on flight mode during night and I don't like to charge when I sleep). Started charging on the way to work then. Battery is really decent at first use :D

There is no native way to backup / restore WhatsApp chats from Android -> iOS and vice versa (Android uses Google Drive, and iOS uses iCloud) but you can do it via 3rd party software with a PC (or mac)

Thanks for that. Not to worry. Think I'm 99% set up now.
