Rust on wheels

    Hi

I've a f10 msport and never noticed this before. I got front tyres changes last week and that's when it became apparent but don't think changing tyres would impact this? Front wheels are meant to be metal, hence rust - back 2 wheels are aluminium I think so no rust. Any ideas what's caused this and anything that can be done? They've looked like this the past few days and it doesn't go away and unless im mad before I got the tyres changed I never noticed this before or wasn't like this?

Sorry maybe it's not rust - the yellow stuff that's inside the wheel, it won't wash off

That is rust and it comes from the brake discs. As you'll know, after you wash the car what's called "flash rust" appears on the disc. What you're seeing on the wheel is this rust which comes off the disc when the brakes are applied after it happens.

Normally it does wipe off and should wash off. In this case as you say it doesn't therefore using a product like Bilt Hamber AutoWheel, Bilt Hamber Korrosol, Gtechniq W6, CarPro IronX or any good iron and fallout remover will get rid of it. The reason it won't wash off is because it has become embeded in the wheel and using one of these products is needed to remove it.

But on the section it is on the wheel it doesn't come into contact with the brakes? I understand the inner section gets rusty looking and that matches your explanation but the steel rim outside of that, just at the edge by the alloys - that can't be caused by the disc can it?

I did a quick google search on the F10 and seems a common problem and only solution was to paint them

That's not the wheel though is it ? It's the bell of the brake disc no ? Hard to tell by the angle of the pics.

The pic shows the brake disc and wheel, the yellow outline is the edge of the brake disc, these will rust because they are not touched by any friction surface. the orange rings are outlining rust stains from the brake disc that have dripped onto the wheel inner surface.
This is normal, brake discs are made form high carbon cast iron to be able to handle the heat from braking.
If you want to remove the rust staining from the wheel you'll need to remove the wheel and apply some iron removal chemical Iron-X is good I believe.
The rust on the brake disc itself is not really removable apart from a quick wire brush.
The rust staining on the part of the disc that is just inside the wheel (top orange ring) can be painted over with high heat paint if you want to go down that road but don't forget the wheel nuts as well, they look pretty crappy as well.
When you have the wheels off try giving them a spruce up with some 0000 wire wool and wd40 to remove the rust and keep them shiny.
That wheel looks like its seen some salt at some point in its life.
