Tesla Model X P100D Ludicrous. With all options ticked, just shy of €200,000. The best family EV.

Maybe you should mention your budget. Hint, hint ;)

And all your other requirements. What age are the kids, what driving pattern do you have, do you need a big boot, what is the longest trip you usually make, etc.

Lets save 10 pages of back and forward.

ELM327, Unkle, et al : Ioniq is best
Soarer et al: Leaf40 is an equal competitor despite rapidgate
Shefwedfan: eGolf, why would you look at anything else

    Occasional randomers: Zoe/tesla

Thanks a million. That's me started and thanks again Unkel!

    Ahem
BMW i3 Rex ....... It's a real EV ( even if it has a bit of an engine and an exhaust, and stuff.... Said by no one in particular

I think you are shot down on the base requirement... "Family of 5"

It's not an EV and it doesn't have 5 seats

Plus Mad lad is not around any more to push its merits.

    Hyundai Kona is excellent too.

But for 5 people then the Leaf has a decent amount of space. Also the Kia Soul is a good family car.

This question can't be answered until we have more info. Budget, size / age of family members, driving patterns, space requirements, etc.

Unfortunately the OP hasn't come back to us, so we can't help them...

Hi Guys, two adults , three children , twenty thousand euro. I am thinking about trying to directly import a Leaf from Japan.

You realise they are manufactured in England?! :D

Even the ones sold in Japan? Go on Tyneside!:D

No, they have multiple plants. Sunderland manufactures for Europe.

Can you up your budget a bit? 20 grand is not enough for a new model Leaf or an Ioniq. You haven't answered the questions about your driving pattern and what age / size your kids are and do you need buggies to carry with you, etc. Do you have 2 cars in the family or is this your only car?

If you have another car and this EV is only for the shorter trips, you might as well keep half your budget in your pocket and buy a decent 2015 (old model) Leaf for a bit over 10 grand

Longest journey would be from Enfield to Dublin.
    We would retain another car.

Then get a 2014 or 2015 or so Leaf! They now hold their value well. You might be able to get one slightly cheaper in the UK. You won't have to pay any taxes or any VRT to bring one in yourself. You will also get a subsidy of €600 for a home charger (should more or less pay for it) and you will get a 50% refund on all your tolls between Enfield and Dublin (and up to 75% discount on the Dublin M50 toll)

Leaf 30 is plenty for you and last you years even with battery degradation, well within your budget

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,744 ✭✭✭marieholmfan

OK. I am going to make a terrible confession. When I think EV I think Leaf like with search engines and Google.
I think a 2015 Leaf is the way to go. Thanks!

I wouldn't buy a Leaf 30. They aren't great value for money imho. And you don't need the range, Enfield to Dublin city centre return is about 80km. Either save most of your budget and get a 2014/2015 Leaf 24, or up your budget and buy a new Model Leaf or an Ioniq - in which case your other family car will probably not get much use from then on :D

There is a chap that lives in Enfield, has a 24kw white Leaf, and drives to Dublin five days a week for work. That's a very easy trip even for a Leaf that has lost a few bars.

    very very interesting.

If you're still looking come the new year I'll be selling my 2014 24kWh Leaf.

Just lost my first bar last week, *sniff* :(

I'll be honest though, you may get a better deal importing from England.

Bars are over rated. The range at 100% drops over time anyway, and is all that really matters.

    +1

Thankfully no bars in Ioniq. I wouldn't want to know if my battery is on 97% or 94% :D

The time wasted online by talking about Nissan Leaf bars is unreal...

And most Ioniqs are probably still at 100% anyway.

True but when selling its about perception.

Someone will be more inclined to buy a 12 bar car than an 11 bar car even though the difference could be a fraction.

This is true. I've explained to people that if you had 12 bars on Monday and 11 on Tuesday, nothing else has changed. The range is slowly dropping anyway.

Best thing to do is get LeafSpy or similar app and check the real state of health of the battery.
