Teacher Absent

    I may be jumping the gun but my Child is in second class. His allocated teacher has missed around 40 days each school year over the past 2 years. This is year 3 and we have had an absence of 3 days already.
    When the teacher is absent the children are divided up and sent to other classes and given work to keep them occupied, don't think this work is ever checked.
    It appears that this level of absenteeism is ok with DES as long as its certified.
    Should the school not put this teacher into resource if she is ill and prone to having short regular absences. 30 children are put out every time this happens. The school is a large school with around 330 children in junior infants to second class.

    Just wondering what happens in other schools

    If the teacher is out on sick leave, there would usually be a sub.teacher, within the constraints set by the DES. Are you sure it is sick leave?
    And no, the teacher, if it is illness should NOT be "put into resource."The children who would formerly have being in receipt of resource hours have the greatest needs in any school.

    Thanks for your reply.cSubs can only be employed if leave is certified or another teacher out at same time. Principal never knows on first day if it’s certified. Also there is a sub shortage in Dublin, so often no sub available.

    If the teacher is missing 20 days a year, I'd presume they were missing more than one day at a time?

    How would you be privy to the information on what type of leave it is or what the principal knows about it?

    Teachers are entitled to 7 days uncertified sick leave in a rolling 2 year period, so very few of these days can be uncertified.

    Your issue seems to be that the class is divided and no sub is in place. As you say there's a shortage of subs so that's probably the problem. Other schools are having the exact same problem. As your child progresses to second level you can expect lots of classes with no qualified subject teacher at all, let alone a sub for brief absences.
