Refurbing an iPhone 5

    My son will replace his iPhone 5 shortly. It needs a new battery and microphone. Is it possible to get it completely refurbished and would it be worth it. Youngest child would use it

    No. To be honest, I don’t think it worthwhile.
    You would be better off buying a secondhand iPhone SE if you want the same 4” screen size, or consider going up in size for a 4.7” model like the iPhone 6 or preferably 6s.

    In my opinion the 5 is now too old to invest in. It is no longer supported with updates by Apple, and it lacks more modern features such as a 64 bit processor.

    Because of these two issues in particular, I’d worry that you'll soon find most app developers will no longer make apps that work on an iPhone 5. I think the end result would probably be a kid bugging you to get them another, newer phone, much sooner than you intend.

    The SE is probably a sweet spot to aim for because of a number of reasons.
    *A very good condition SE can usually be picked up for ~150 euro, maybe even less.
    **SE was introduced in springtime of 2016, so updates from Apple for nearly three more years.
    ***It has the same processor as the larger 6s, but the same basic body as the 5 & 5s with which you are familiar. Plus it can usually be bought for less than 6s, or even 6 on secondhand market.

    Boards sister site Adverts.ie is a great place to pick up a good deal on a secondhand phone. Just make sure to check the feedback on the seller from other users and you’ll be right as rain.
