VW timing belt

Recently picked up a 2004 vw polo 1.2 (3 cylinder engine) for alright money. Cosmetically the car is rough enough (previous owner apparently scraped bodywork and kerbed wheels) but the engine appears to be sound with only 25 k miles up so far and it drives perfect. Oil, air filter coils and plugs all appear to be in good nick.
The handbook recommends changing the timing belt every 40k miles. Assuming it has never been done , is it prudent to get this job done?
I know there is an issue with timing belts on these cars but there is no mention of a time period for a change.

The 3cyl has a chain and shouldn't have to be changed but they do stretch, i wouldn't bother probably cost more to replace than what you payed for the car its actually worth.

Has it got an NCT apparently that engines biggest issue for NCT is emissions. I used to have one literally dogged the life out of it driving around Ireland till the engine finally let go a long way from home. Queue the SOS call
