VM Price hike in Jan 2019

Just got an e-mail from VM telling me that my bundle will go up by €3.50 p.m. next January and giving me the statutory notice that I can cancel within 30 days.

The headline says it's the broadband that's going up but the text just refers to my 'package'...

From January 2019 the price of your package will increase by €3.50 a month. This change takes effect for you on January 21st 2019, your first bill date of the year.

I assume that the vast majority of people taking TV from VM also have their BB so you can expect this communication soon, they tend to stagger bad news so not everyone gets it on the same day.

Got the same message today (have BB, TV, Landline package) and it's probably the push I need to go Free to air with Digiweb for broadband. I never even use the landline.

That is to pay for the supposedly free sports channels

Similar price hike in Jan 2018 when they removed the "self-serve discount"

I too have received the price rise notification which will bring my monthly payment to VM to €97.00. I am paying for 240MB broadband which becomes about 50MB wifi on laptop and 100MB on phone. I also get the max TV package (c.100 channels) and unlimited fixed line and mobile calls from landline.

I have been with them since the time of RTE Relays which is more than 30 years and am unhappy at constant price increases for no added value. It seems to me that existing customers are being gouged to pay for reduced prices to new customers. No loyalty at all to long standing customers.

I have phoned about the price increase and their loyalty department have suggested that I reduce my bundle to a lower TV package which will save me some money but this doesnt strike me as being a reward for loyalty.

Loyalty is a two way street and I believe the only way to get that message to VM is to hit them in the pocket. No longer will I subsidise new customers.

I am happy enough with the service and would only be leaving because of the continuous price increases

Is there anyone here who can advise on what/who I should switch to. I am in Dublin so presumably shouldnt have an issue with availability. I want decent quality limitless broadband, television and home phone with free calls to fixed and mobile numbers. Is there such a package? eir's outage at the weekend and other horror stories on the talk to thread make me a bit wary of them, but I am open to be convinced. I am not interested in anything that requires a dish.

If you don't want a dish your options are very limited.

If you are close to a green broadband cabinet (less than 500m) you will get speeds of around 50mb/s which are adequate.

Eir are the only operator offering unlimited broadband outside of Virgin. Some smaller companies do offer it - Airwire is one but they may not be an option.

Sky TV and broadband is probably your best bet but you would be better to ring back Virgin and threaten to cancel everything unless you get a better deal.

A dish would give you more free channels and save you €500/600 a year.

Unfortunately all BB and TV services have yearly price increases so if you move to another provider it will be the same story year after year

As others have mentioned threaten to cancel and you might get a deal like 3 months half price, but as always New Customers get better deals

That's what I've done and they offered me a deal I am happy with.

I rang VM with the intention of getting rid and going with DigiWeb. After a bit of haggling they offered me broadband & phone for 59 pcm with €15pcm discount for 9 months - on a 12 month contract. So a total of 573 for the year.

Means I don't have to fight with the missus over getting rid of the landline. My package was due to rise up to 88.50 next month so I'm happy enough.

Just need to find the best Free2Air/Saorview package out there now...

I am in the same boat as you. Virgin have a one way only view of the meaning of loyalty. I am paying €100 approx for BB, landline and TV (have option on mobile but gave up as it caused me problems. Am thinking of Eir. Would it be rude to ask what deal you got. Cheers

Proper multiswitch install is still probably the most futureproof - despite unicable and optical options coming out for LNBs there will be boxes supporting standard setups probably until the very end of satellite being a home reception format - but a bit pricey at the start. Definitely worth investigating if you used to use the VM analogue in multiple rooms.
