Advice\Thoughts on potential offer call

    Hi all,

    I was recently contacted about a potential role and was asked for CV and proposed salary expectations - I replied with what I was currently on (X) and what I would be looking for (Y) if I was to move.

    I had two interviews since and am due to hear back soon if I was successful or not. My question is....I've since been looking into the salary for the sector that this role is in, and it seems I may have undervalued myself a little. What do you think the proper etiquette would be IF they were to call me back and offer the role?

    Is there room for me to change my asking salary (I'm not talking substantially - ~5-10k) or would this be seen as a negative against me?

    Also, if a call came through offering a role would it be normal to accept it there and then or would asking to sleep on it be okay?

    I could say I accept the role, but we need to revisit the asking salary I originally provided? Would that sound reasonable?

    Thanks for any insight\feedback

    For future reference check the market and see what the going rate is before you give expectations in the future (Happened me once too :o). If you get a call, you can just say that you told your current employer you had been for an interview and they were eager to retain you and had made a new improved offer for you to stay. Then ask them what they are offering. That is how I would play it out from your current situation.

    It would look bad on you.

    The process goes something like this:

    OK I rang that guy and he said he wants X.

    <proceed to interview him twice>

    Alright let's make him an offer.

    WTF he wants 5 - 10k more.

    Unless your role is really specialist and really hard to fill, we would probably drop you... especially if we're a big company and we now have to go to HR/CEO asking for more money. You've made us look bad.
