    Probably around €10 an hour.

    I was in Penny's for Christmas 2015 and I was on 9.88 p/h.

I worked from late October until new years day. This was a PT job so I was doing 25 hours a week.

They cap weekly hours at 37.5. So you'll be looking at 375 max a week. If your work Sunday you can make more, as they pay 1.5 times your hourly rate.

From a retail perspective I think Boots and Penneys pay the best. 10.70 for Boots and 10.90 for Penneys. Both offer a Sunday premium aswell IIRC.

I work in a retail unit to fund my studies. You will earn roughly around €10 an hour, the exact rate varies from place to place. I have seen €9.55 and up to €11.40 give or take as many employers pay more or have bonus schemes for the staff/commission. The standard temp week in my shop seems to be around 25 hours a week but it can be more or it can be less depending on the availability you submit and your age. The duration of the contract also varies, I've seen anywhere from just 2 days to cover the busiest sale days to three months either through starting earlier or being asked to stay on. Some people inevitably end up being kept.

Christmas in retail is no walk in the park though, especially if you are a student. I was working until 12am Christmas Day to prepare the shop for St. Stephen's Day sale having already worked a substantial amount of days the 2 weeks previous. Some were in for four hours on Christmas Day. You can't go out St. Stephen's Day or the day after for drinking as all staff were expected to work and could not receive holidays from around the middle of December to just after New Years Day. Our Stephen's Day sale began at 5am. Expect long shifts too either very early or very late. You won't be doing any of the very early shifts or very late shifts if you are under 18.

I know it seems like a lot of negative but that is the reality, at least in my store.

By the time of the sale, you work for next.

I second what Elemonator said about retail being tough at Christmas. It’s very very busy, late hours, no time off, Christmas Eve madness followed by preparing for the sales. My shift at a high street store was 4pm to 10pm for Christmas week one year. Constant queues, no quiet times. Wrapping gifts, grumpy customers, stressed managers. Certainly not easy money!

I think this will depend on where you are based.
I was in Dunnes in a "country" store in Drapery.
Now granted this was 10 years ago...
It was a 6 week contract at the time on just below €10 an hour.
I had a 24-30 hour contract which meant the min hours I got were 24 and the max was 30
In that particular store the hours were very fairly divided in terms of you got a good mix of early mornings, days and nights.
The week before Christmas you were in until midnight.
You get extra money after a certain time - I have 10pm in my head but it could have been 11pm.
The first few late late nights there was no one around so they asked if anyone wanted to go home - obviously dont get paid in that case.
The contract ended on Christmas Eve but all the people on contracts were the people working on Christmas Eve. The regular workers all had it off.... Which kind of balanced out as they were all in then for reopening and for New Years.
They didnt keep anyone on at the time but nearly all of us got calls around April the following year to see if we wanted to go back

Correct! I think we're the only store open at that time, the rest of the Irish retailers stay closed.
