    Hey folks,
I'm posting on behalf of someone else who has learned they can get new windows installed in their house and get a grant for €8,000. The council would pay 95% of the cost and the home owner, 5%.

They are in a semi detached 4 bed house with 1 big (downstairs living room ) and 3 small windows (2 bedrooms) at the front and then 1 big (kitchen) and 2 medium (2 back bedrooms) windows at the back with medium bathroom window on the open side upstairs where the laneway to the back garden is.

I'm not sure if €8,000 would come anywhere near what the total may end up costing to replace all windows, but they are thinking maybe they could only get the big front window and 2 medium back bedroom windows if that's all their budget allows for. I'm not sure would there be much point in this for heat retention? But these would be the rooms that are used most, so at least these rooms would be warmer?

There's also the question of whether to get double or triple glazed. I think I remember reading here before, that the performance over price increase from double to triple, isn't really worth it for the Irish climate? Is that true?

They are looking to get quotes, but I don't want anyone trying to rip them off, especially if they know they are getting a grant.

I can try get exact dimensions of all the windows if this will make a big difference, but for now just say your average 3/4 bed semi.

Any feedback or input would be great!

I imagine this is under the warmer homes scheme?

If so I think the council will tell you what works are needed and I don't think you would be allowed to just replace some windows as the purpose is energy saving.
They also have their own list of contractors

We are getting windows installed and have 14 windows in our house only one of them is a decent size out of the rest 10 are what I’d call normal size and the other 3 are narrower windows on side of house.

The original starting quote was for double glazed french opening cream coloured (slightly more expensive then white one side opening) and french back doors total €8900. Cost about an extra €800 to upgrade to triple glazed.

We’re using a south Dublin company who are long in business.

Can you link to this scheme please.
I’m not aware of any council scheme for window upgrades. The 95% thing your talking about sounds very close to the home adaptation grant that the council do but that doesn’t allow for window uogrades only.

Please clarify what scheme you are talking about as the SEAI grants for windows definitely don’t cover 95% of the works.
