About to start a house build and need an address for a post code etc. This will be the farmhouse for the farm.

There is already a 'Townland' Farm and a 'Townland' House. Field names could be an idea.

There's a tremendous amount of local history contained in field and other natural feature names, it'd be good to preserve something of this if you can.

Haven’t watched it for years but always quite liked Home Farm, from Emmerdale.

    +1
OP have a look at http://map.geohive.ie/ it is the online Ordinance Survey system. You can look up your area by zooming in on the map. You can then search for historical maps and view them.

Here is screenshot of one from 1837-1842 of a relatives farm that is now part of Dublin Airport. You can zoom in a see the names of landmarks, streams etc and you may get your farm name from it.
Edit: you could also look up the historical census data for your farm/family and that may give you more info http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/

Never heard of having to name for the address. Plenty houses in this townland with the same address and no issue, esp with eircodes now. Has the herd a name? Could use that if you wanted to

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,721 ✭✭✭✭_Brian

We used the name from the field we were building our house in.

    Dunwaukin Farm.

(You might want to say it out loud to get that one).

Edit: there's a townsland named Paradise in south wexford with Paradise Little as the neighbouring townsland.

Put a bit of imagination into the name anyways.

When my sister bought her house her sister in law sent her a plaque with a house name on it. The sister in law took it on herself to name a house that wasn't hers!
