With a housing apocalypse in Dublin why is this happening?

Because datacentres are paid for by business, not by local authority housing budgets.

Not sure what one has to do with the other.

Nor am I sure why this is in a national forum rather than a regional one.

Grange castle has plenty of Data centers already and is popular for various reasons. There are acres upon acres of land out there and this will have zero effect on housing one way or another

I'm just down the road in clondalkin and there's no biblical destruction going on with any of the houses round these parts.

    ..but the homeless

It's an area close to transport and amenities.

Why use it for a data centre they could locate in Donegal?

Who wants to live and work in Donegal?

If you think Donegal has the IT infrastructure to properly run a data centre (redundant high bandwidth data links, redundant connections to the electricity grid, etc.) readily available, then I'd suggest you revisit your understanding of what they actually require. Not to mention that if anything on site fails that is not in the skillset of the "moles" who look after day-to-day routine maintenance, it's too far removed from most servicing agents with the scale to support the operation, e.g. aircon/refrigeration, large-scale electrical, etc.

You could equally ask why Amazon have a multitude of DCs in the vicinity of Tallaght, Dublin 15 and Clarehall, all of which are probably at least as well connected as (if not better than) Grange Castle in terms of moving people, but they do, and they're hiring the aforementioned "moles" like mad to support them.

You happen to know a lot of people in Donegal who need data center jobs?

Why not house people in Donegal. It's the same reason. It's the backend of nowhere.

(BTW, I do love Donegal. It's beautiful and the people are lovely, but as a tech person, it'd be next to impossible for me to work there plus I'd be leaving all my family and friends behind)

No need for a Data Center in Donegal, don't they have everything is on file in the filing cabinet
