Galaxy tab 2 help

    I have a seven inch Galaxy tab 2(it's pretty old but does power up)
    It's running 4.1.2 but I'm pretty sure from reading online that it had an update to 4.2.2.
    A couple of apps I've tried to download won't because it's running an old OS.
    Yet when I try and update it's saying I have the software up to date software.
    So I tried to root it but for some reason it won't read that it has been plugged into a PC and the PC doesn't read it either..
    It is the original cable however the charger isn't and it does take an eternity to charge.
    I'm thinking that shouldn't affect it being read by the PC though...

    Any help would be great
