Hey fairly new to this forum so if I'm posting in the wrong section let me know.
Basically, I've a ford 1.6 diesel 2011. Been causing me absolute chaos. Have it remapped, dpf out and now the engine is gone. Getting sick of it at this stage and was thinking of fixing it up and selling it for a honda accord 2.0. Those engines are bullet proof from what I've heard but my main concern is the fuel consumption. I do around 120km daily. Obviously the honda will eat more fuel but was wondering if it's that much of a difference considering it would be a lot more reliable? Was also looking at a few Toyotas or a civic. Any advices would be much appreciated thanks!!

Would be looking to spend about 3000 so could possibly get a 2007 accord

I'd look at a civic saloon 1.8I vtec. Good fuel economy, very reliable and can be got within your budget.

Honda accord 2.0 petrol will give about 30mpg give or take a mpg or 2

Ford 1.6 (what model is it?) Should give about 50mpg so you will have about a 60 to 70% increase in fuel costs on what you are paying now.

4 gallons a day in accord v 2.4 gallons in the Ford.

A gallon is about €6.75 now so you'll spend an extra tenner a day on fuel or thereabouts.

Approx figures but I'd say I'm close enough to reality.

If that's your 5 day work commute you'll do it about 220 times a year which is about 2 grand extra in fuel.

So weigh one up against the other. And tax will be about 400-500 more too

You would get a very nice avensis 1.8vvti for that money.
    They do about 40mpg.
The last models were nice.07/08 on the old tax system.

Mother in law has a 04 accord from new. Never gave a days trouble. Drinks fuel like is going out of fashion. The 30mpg quoted above is probably optimistic although depends on the type of journey obviously.

I have one, that I'm currently selling. Fuel economy varies a bit between summer and winter, average 8.6 l/100km (32.8 mpg) in winter and 8.3 l/100km (34 mpg) in summer, mainly Dublin with some motorway driving.

I never got anywhere near 40mpg from them.

I did and I got more.
Depends where and how you drive.

Indeed, I coaxed my 2.5 petrol is 250 to 7L/100 on a round trip from Cork to Tralee over the summer but I average around 10.5L/100 normally

OP for your budget I’d go with a 1.8 Civic Saloon. You’ll get low to mid 40’s on your daily commute and they’re very reliable. Tax and insurance will also be cheaper than with a 2.0 accord.

Yeah civic seems like the more reasonable choice but the accord does look and feel much better (obviously). Was also considering either a 1.4 corolla Or a 1.6 avensis but would expect them to be fairly sluggish

Corolla Saloon? Please don't, they have to be the ugliest most mundane understyled car ever built by Toyota. You will fall asleep driving one they are so boring.

Decided on a 1.8 fd1 civic, thanks for the advice! Weirdly enough got quoted a cheaper insurancr quote on a 1988 e30 320i than on a 2008 1.8 civic

I found insurance was very high on the 1.8 petrol civics for me too when I was looking, it's the image they have. In fact I was quoted cheaper on an Audi S3 that was 5 years older
