My 08 1.4 petrol Passat orange exhaust light has shown up 3 times in the past 3 weeks, when it does the car chugs on acceleration and is pretty undriveable. When started up again a while later the light is off and the car drives as normal.
I've had it with the mechanic after the first time but he couldn't find any errors on the diagnostics and nothing obvious showed up, it just happened again this morning but at lunchtime the car drives fine.
Mechanic told me that light is hooked up to all the electrics as well and it could be a sensor problem.
Anyone got any advice on this please?

I think the owners manual in those refers to the check engine light as the exhaust emissions light. It could literally be anything and those 1.4 engines are prone to all manner of issues to be fair.

Oh right, not good. I have no real way of knowing how to sort this so?

You can get a cheapo scan tool and connect when light is on, maybe it'll show something.

Just came on again whilst starting driving, car started to smell a bit so pulled over, turned off engine. Started it back up again and car ran fine again.

Coils are well-known issues on those engines.....and stretched chains....sorry

Had a similar issue with an Audi TT. The TDC sensor was failing. It was an easy diy fix but an expensive part from Audi. Tried spurious one at €50 just and it failed. The Audi one was €175 but cured the issue. Hope it ain't that bit in yours but check it. I'm still shaking my head thinking about the tiny box with fuk all in it that Audi charged €175 for 👿
