Registered for income tax but put in wrong start date

    Hi,

I work as a self-employed freelance developer. I recently registered for income tax on the Revenue website, however, I put my business start date as 1st January 2017 when in fact it was 1st January 2018.

Does anyone know how I'd go about changing this? Am I even allowed to change it? I am assuming that changing it would cause a red flag with Revenue as the start date I incorrectly entered would mean a tax payment is due this year, while changing it will mean no payment for them.

Is this situation easy to rectify?

    Very easy.

Write to Revenue (the enquiries function on ROS/MyAccount) and tell them exactly what you've said here. They can amend the start date. And it's not a red flag for them in that way. Lots of people register for self-assessment and then never end up actually doing the work that they registered for, either in the year they registered or ever. So don't be worrying.
