Hong Kong. Hotel recommendations

I am travelling alone and will be staying over in Hong Kong in January, on a return trip to Australia.
I have no idea whether to stay. Should I be looking in Kowloon or on Hong Kong island? Any specific hotel recommendations would be great.
(Travel to and from airport is a consideration. My flight out is early morning, 1 am so I will need to travel to the airport late evening, around 10-11 pm. Is there public transport link?)

I have only two days there so I will likely only hit the tourist spots. I would be interested in culture and historic sites. Would this suggest Kowloon or Hong Kong or does it matter.

Any information or advice gratefully received.

    thanks

Kowloon or HK Island won't really matter, as public transport is pretty extensive. Get an Octopus card when you get in, and you should be grand. TST/Mongkok/Jordan/Yau Ma Tei are grand, central areas to stay in Kowloon, and Wanchai/Causeway Bay/Admiralty/Central/Sheung Wan fine for HK Island.

There are plenty of buses to the airport, but you can also get there directly from Hong Kong or Kowloon train stations. Can even check in your bags at the train station.

I always stay at the Metropark Hotel Kowloon (the one at 75 Waterloo Road...there are two!)
They offer an airport shuttle service too which you can book at any time after you book your stay, payable when you arrive. Public transport is great in HK but I always avail of hotel pickup and drop off for airport transfers as I find it's worth the money and they will cater for late departure (public transport doesn't run all night contrary to popular belief).
The location is awesome. Very close to both Mongkok & Yau Ma Tei MTR stops (approx equi-distant 8 min walk).
Getting an Octopus card is a must. Public transport is so cheap too that you'll get great value out of it. Use the MTR to head across to HK Island for sight seeing etc. Lots to do.

Hong Kong Side: Get the Tram up to Victoria Peak (you can use your Octopus card for this). Also, check out the trams around Central.
Kowloon Side: Victoria Harbor (N281 bus, opposite hotel outside Han Seng Bank). Ladies Market is just a short stroll from this hotel also. You should also check out the market at Sham Shui Po which just a few stops up from Mongkok on the MTR. Loads to see & do!

I mean it's up to you. Hong Kong island is the part of the city you see in postcards etc, Kowloon is the more authentic feel of a south East Asian city.

Kowloon is closer to the airport but ironically Hong Kong island has better transport links to it. The airport express line operates from 5.50am with last train at 12.48am. Journey time is 24 minutes from HK island to airport https://www.travelchinaguide.com/cityguides/hongkong/transportation/metro-subway-map.htm

As far as accommodation goes Hong Kong is not cheap. Kowloon will be cheaper than HK island but still quite expensive on average
