I can’t afford and don’t know how to discreetly access mental health services

Hi. Basically I need help. For years now i have been experiencing an abundance of issues, self harm, suicide attempts, eating disorder, substance abuse, psychosis, the list goes on. I more than likely have a diagnosable illness. I’m thinking a personality disorder or some sort of psychotic disorder but i’m not going to send diagnose obviously. I’ve also been sexually assaulted twice which definitely plays into this.

So i need help. I need psychotherapy, i need to get diagnosed so o can understand all this crazy **** in my head. BUT i don’t know how to do that, I’ve no job, no money and extremely unsupportive parents who i still live with. If i get help it would need to be behind their backs. They are really bad with stuff like this, kicked me out when i was 14 after my school told them i was cutting myself and saying i was suicidal, they’re embarrsssd of it, so i’m for sure not telling them about how i’m hallucinating entire whole people or experiencing delusions. Because of my parents i couldn’t get help by myself abd have been dealing with this since i was 12/13 but i’m 18 now so surely i can get help abd diagnosed discreetly without them needing to be involved?? i just don’t know how or how to fund it. i’m living in dublin btw. please help.

You need to go to hospital or a doctor.

    Contact Samaritans they will help.

If you present at an emergency dept with symptoms like that (visual and auditory hallucinations etc), you will be seen by an ED doctor first and referred to psychiatry. Even when no admission is warranted, you will be linked in with their outpatient services after initial assessment by psych.

As in any emergency dept, there may well be a lengthy wait, depending on the urgency of your case as determined at triage, but you will see a psychiatrist if you need to/explain as you have there. You need care on an ongoing basis. There are public day hospital/OPD services too that your GP can refer you to but in my experience (as an ED doctor), this is also a good way. I think you need a proper psychiatric assessment prior to approaching any therapy methods.

It sounds like you need help; please stay determined to engage with mental health services. They are very far from perfect due to lack of funds and understaffing but they also do a lot of good.

I second “Mymind” and also “Genesis”.
My psychiatrist advised me that both are good because they have certified psychotherapists and low cost aswell.
Both are self referrals so you don’t need to go to the GP first

You are 18 your parents don’t need to be involved with your care as you are an adult. You might want to nominate another next of kin

    Good luck with everything

    A few points:

    1. Help is available and it sounds like you need it.
    2. There are good suggestions made above. Pick one and follow through with it urgently.
    3. Avoid all the stuff like alcohol, non- prescribed meds that will further mess with your head, inhibitions etc.
    4. You will absolutely not have to involve your parents if you don't want to.
    5. Everything you discuss with care professionals will be entirely confidential, except for the sexual assault element which, depending on its nature, may be subject to mandatory reporting.
    6. Now that you are 18, you ought to be able to get access to public health services, rather than having to get private health services. So the issue of cost should not be the first concern for you.
    7. You WILL get help, once you start the process. As a first step, make the first phone call to one of the services mentioned and take it from there.
Look here as an example: https://www.pieta.ie/?/ive-been-feeling-suicidal/client-journey/
    8. If you can't get to see a service this way, and if you feel you are unable to cope and/or the "crazy ****" in your head is getting worse, get into an A&E quickly. If you go in before noon, you'll have a better chance of not getting caught up in the crowded scenes that occur later and at nights/weekends.
    9. Get help! Please don't wait!

    Wishing you well. Good luck...

    Hi Op

there is some good advice here.

my 2 cents. if you are self harming and have suicidal thoughts go straight to A&E or go to your gp and ask for a referral to A&E. so that today without delay. you will end up paying only the gp free or the A&E fee. however you will be put straing onto the system, and follow up appointments will be free.

if you need help but dont think its an emergency call pieta house today, and you will get an appointment within a week and its free. they can help advise and get you in the right direction.

please look after yourself and pick one of the above options. Ps if you have no job, you should have a mendiacal card making trips to gP free etc.

I will give Samaritans a go but I worry they only deal with suicidal thoughts whereas what i really need is an actual psychologist who can diagnose me and help me with these other things. I dont think Samaritans are equipped to deal with something psychosis related but idk? Maybe they can at least point me in the right direction

Pieta house and their services are free.

A friend I know diagnosed with bpd and psychosis told me Pieta wont deal with someone with bpd and probably other personality disorders, which is something i likely have a lot of the symptoms of, so for them id have to just talk about suicide and cover up the fact im experiencing hallucinations etc. And i feel like the extent of what they will do is tell me IVE so much to live for yada yada which I dont think will do much, i want help for the other stufff so that in turn ill be less suicidal

Have looked into them before and they look great and like they'd be perfect for what I need. Its just money thats the issue there. I know for students its 20 euro which is very good, just I dont have a job at the moment so.. but when i do have the money they are probably who i will head to cause they are self referall too so i dont need to go through my gp

Hm. I see. I didnt know this thank you very much. I don't know if I should wait until things are bad bad to show up at an emergency dep though cause i feel like currently this isnt an emergency? that might just be me because im used to dealng with it though and I guess it takes very little for me to get "bad" and urgent so getting the help now is probably more sensible when I have some control. I'd just be unsure about how to go about doing this. But yeah I need psychiatric assessment.

Haven't heard of genesis, will check them out too, thank you. Certified psychotherapist, self referral and low cost is what I need. Just means I need a job to pay for it which im trying with great difficulty to find

Im going to be brutally honest. We do mental health week and days. But out services are poor. Google low cost services. Try pieta house. A lot of posters here say talk to somebody. Get help but the brutal truth is more people die from suicide than road deaths yet we underfund mental health services. If you have voted FG /FF/LAb last ten years you basically agree with this underfunding.

My advice is stress suicidal intent-only chance you have of getting access to decent services
