New York and then on to Victoria Canada

Hi, we are looking at going to New York for a couple of days next summer and then onto Victoria where we have family. Family of 5 inc 3 kids, 7, 9 & 11. Anyone any recommendations on where we can stay in NY, somewhere nice & central but won’t cost the earth. Also when is the best time to book flights. TIA
