Help. Fan in engine will not turn off. Battery dead

    Hi everyone..I drive a 05 ford focus 1.4 lx model...Fan always turns off when engine is stopped but did not today and it killed the battery ..I rang my mechanic as i was told it could be a relay switch or a temperature sensor gone and he said there is no switch in them and I have to bring it to a ford garage for a software update ..he cannot fix it...I cannot afford a ford garage as when i rang them they said its 130e just to put it on a machine alone and then whatever they have to do on top of that !! Any ideas i would be grateful..thanks

    As for driving it now. Get a jump lead start drive it home and just pull the black wire off to disconnect the battery. Should reset the fan. Otherwise youll have to leave it off.

    Ring a different mechanic. The sensor if faulty can be checked be any descent OBD equipment and the relay by any mechanic. The ECU shouldn't need a software update.

    I had same problem years ago with an old Mazda, I couldn't figure out what was going on so I rigged up a mechanical switch inside the car to toggle the radiator fan on/off. On an old shed like what I was driving that worked fine for me. When I saw the temperature creep a bit beyond the half way point on the temp gauge I use to pop that switch on to cool it back down. Funny when i think about it.

I drove for over a year with it like that and sold the car but never mentioned the jerry rigged fan to the buyer. I used to see the car locally for many years afterwards and I'm guessing the fan switch was still probably in place for all those years.

    Mine was a 323 also, a 91' 3 dr hatch. Your solution sounds a lot better. I rigged up the fan directly to the battery with some cable brought in through a rubber bung on the firewall with a make shift on/off switch. I only really had to toggle the switch in heavy traffic though.
