I have bought an impreza for winter use. The tax expired in 08/18. I have the tax book and it’s still in previous owners name. I plan to put it on the road for December January and February and declare it off the road again till the next year. My question for now is how do I declare it off the road without having to tax it. I can change it into my name at any stage as the change of ownership date hasn’t been filled in yet.

You can declare it off the road when it's newly registered to you without having to tax it. There is a time limit, think it's 21 days from date of purchase.....

    Part C.....

    You have two options really...

    1. Sign the logbook in your name on 1st December and post it. Problem with that is you'll only be able to post it on Monday 3rd December, it will probably take a week or two to process, and once it's processed you can tax your car online, but that's another few days waiting for tax disc in post, so effectively you won't have your disc nearly up to Christmas. Might be no bother, but might cause trouble if you're pulled over or parked in public.

    2. In this option, you can sign logbook into your name earlier say on 11th of November, and post it. That way you'll receive your new logbook before end of November, and then you can declare the car off the road (from 11th November). Then on 1st December you can tax your car online, and start driving. You still won't get the disc though until probably 5th to 7th December. Alternatively, you can wait until 3rd December Monday, and tax it in the motortax office and receive disc stragith away (but that way you can't drive on 1st and 2nd December).

Complete the change of ownership and send off the VLC.
Keep an eye on motortax.ie every day. Once it shows a that a change of ownership has been notified you will know that they have received the VLC.
AFAIK you cannot apply to either Tax, or declare a SORD, until the status changes to "new VLC issued" (or something quite similar).
Once you see this on the motortax site you can apply online for a PIN number to either Tax or SORD the Car. The PIN request is automated so you will receive it immediately.

Change ownership now at local MTO. Send an SORD with it and it will be done for you.
bring it in person or post.
DO not send SORD to Shannon.

No point in waiting and then it can be taxed whenever required.
