Water leak

Hi I reported a leak from my gateway out on to the public path two weeks ago. It was initially a trickle and is now flowing out and I’ve had to block it with 6 sandbags.
I rang Irish water a few times and I’ve been told they will fix it as a good will gesture- I’m loosing gallons of water!
It has been surveyed and is a public mains leak in my garden.
I have asked for a time frame and I’ve been told they can’t tell me if it will be days weeks or months.
Somebody slipped yesterday as it’s on a hill and I’m terrified now with the cold weather coming the public path will be an ice rink. I also asked for the names of private contractors as I understand it’s a specialist job and not for a Regular plumber. Should I turn off the water?
    What will I do?
    Noirin
